Some links below are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It funds the testing budget and never changes a verdict — affiliate policy.

Instagram will not let you put a link in a caption. It will, however, let a tool answer a comment with a DM, and a DM can carry a link. That is the whole trick behind every "comment WORD and I'll send it to you" post you have seen this year, and it is worth twenty minutes of a solo marketer's time because it fixes the one structural problem Instagram has for anyone whose goal is a click.

This is the setup we use on our own account, built on ManyChat because it is the Meta-approved tool that does this one job best. It is also the honest version: no follow-to-unlock, no email demand in the DM, one keyword per payload, and a plain link. The gate exists to hand over what you promised, faster than you could by hand.

Before you start: decide the payload

The automation is the easy part. The decision is what each keyword unlocks. Pick one page per keyword and write down the URL now, with tracking on it, because you will paste it into the DM text and never look at it again:

https://yoursite.com/starter-vault?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=ig-gate

The utm_medium=dm tag is the part people skip. It keeps gate traffic separate from your bio link in GA4, which is the only way to answer, a month from now, whether the gate beats "link in bio" for you. Our six keywords each point at one article or one lead magnet; a keyword that points at a homepage is a broken promise.

Keyword rules. One word, capitals, that nobody types by accident and everybody can spell: VAULT, STACK, SCRIPT. Not YES, INFO or LINK, which people type for other reasons, and not an emoji, which Instagram's spam filters dislike in replies and which reads as bait.

Step 1. Prepare the Instagram account (2 minutes)

  • Your account must be a professional account, Business or Creator. Personal accounts cannot be connected.
  • In the Instagram app: Settings, then Messages and story replies, then Message controls. Turn on Allow access to messages. Without this switch no third-party tool can read or send your DMs, and it is the number one cause of "the automation doesn't fire".
  • A Facebook Page is optional. You can connect with your Instagram login directly. Link a Page only if you also run Meta ads and want the same identity in Ads Manager.

Step 2. Connect ManyChat (3 minutes)

Create the free ManyChat account, choose Instagram as the channel, and sign in with Instagram. Approve every permission it asks for; declining one of them produces an automation that half-works. The free plan is enough for setup and for the first posts, and it needs no card.

Step 3. Build the gate with the Quick Automation (8 minutes)

On the ManyChat home tab, click Auto-DM links from comments. It walks you through the flow in order, and each screen has one decision.

  1. Which post. Three options: a specific post, any post, or the next post you publish. Use "next post" when you are scheduling the Reel and building the gate the day before, which is the normal solo workflow. Only one "next post" automation can be armed at a time.
  2. Which comments. Choose the keyword option and add your word, plus the two obvious misspellings people will make. Do not choose "any comment", which DMs everyone who writes "great reel" and burns your contact allowance on people who asked for nothing.
  3. Public reply. Write three short variations and let ManyChat rotate them. This is not decoration: Instagram's spam detection watches for identical auto-replies, and ManyChat's own help pages tell you to vary the wording and avoid emoji-only replies. Something like "Sent, check your DMs" / "On its way to your inbox" / "Just sent it over" is enough.
  4. Opening DM. Turn it on, with a single button that says "Send me the link". This is the step Meta's rules make necessary. A first private reply on its own does not open the 24-hour messaging window and does not make the person a contact; a tap on a button does. One extra tap for them buys you the ability to follow up and a record of who asked.
  5. Ask to follow first. Off. Holding the link hostage for a follow is the toll-booth version of this mechanic, and the people who follow to unlock a PDF unfollow the week after. Earn the follow with the payload.
  6. Ask for email. Off, in the DM. The page the link lands on is where you ask for an email, with a proper reason. Asking twice in two channels is how you lose them in both.
  7. The link message. Paste the fixed text for this keyword. Plain, one sentence saying what it is, then the tracked URL. Ours look like this:
The Starter Vault, all seven copywriter prompts plus the Copy Brief, free:
https://futureproofmarketer.com/starter-vault?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=ig-gate
  1. Follow-up if not clicked. Optional. One message, a few hours later, that repeats the link once. Never a second.

Click Go Live. When everything is on, the messages fire in this order: opening DM, then the link, then the follow-up. Runs in the Automations tab counts opening DMs; Sends in the Insights tab counts link messages, so the two numbers will differ by however many people never tapped the button.

Step 4. Test it from a second account (3 minutes)

Do not skip this. Comment the keyword from another account, or ask a friend to. Check all four things: the public reply appears under the comment, the opening DM arrives, the button produces the link message, and the link opens the right page with the tracking on it. The most common failure is a permission you declined in step 2; the second most common is the "Allow access to messages" switch from step 1.

Two Instagram limits to know before you conclude the test is broken. The trigger fires only on a person's first comment under a post, so commenting the keyword twice from the test account does nothing the second time. And the trigger only works on posts you own or co-own; a remix of someone else's Reel cannot carry a gate.

Step 5. Ship the caption (2 minutes)

Replace the closing "link in bio" line with the keyword line: "Comment VAULT and I'll DM you the link." Keep the same-day Stories link sticker as well; the gate is added, not swapped. In the post itself, deliver the value before the ask. A Reel that is only a trailer for the DM is the pattern that has made people distrust the mechanic.

Keep the ManyChat mobile app installed. It can build and edit the same automation, and on the day a post takes off it is where you will see whether you are about to hit a plan limit.

What to measure, and when to pay

Three numbers, all from tools you already have and all fitting the fifteen-minute Friday ritual:

  • Keyword comments per post, from the Instagram post itself. This is the number that decides the plan.
  • Sends and click-through rate, from ManyChat's Insights tab. A gate that sends but is not clicked has a payload problem, not an automation problem.
  • Sessions with utm_medium=dm against your bio-link sessions, in GA4. This is the only fair test of whether the gate earns its caption line.

On the plan: ManyChat's free tier covers 25 active contacts a month (checked Sept 2026), meaning 25 people who receive a DM. Once that is used the replies stop until next month, and the free plan cannot buy overage. Our rule: stay free until one post draws more than 25 keyword comments, then move to Essential at $14 a month billed annually for 250 contacts. The upgrade is not about the hours; it is about the gate not going silent on the post that finally worked.

One last habit. Set a monthly reminder to open ManyChat and confirm the Instagram connection is still green. Permissions expire, the automation stops without a warning, and the first symptom is a row of unanswered keyword comments under your best post.

Questions we actually get

What is an Instagram comment gate?

A caption call-to-action that asks people to comment a keyword, paired with an automation that DMs them a link when they do. It exists because Instagram captions cannot carry clickable links. The comment also counts as engagement, which is why the mechanic spread so fast in 2026.

Which keyword should I use for comment-to-DM?

One word, in capitals, that nobody types by accident and everyone can spell: VAULT, STACK, SCRIPT. Avoid YES, INFO, LINK and emoji, which people type for other reasons and which look like engagement bait. One keyword per payload, so the DM text can be fixed and specific.

Should I turn on the opening DM in ManyChat?

Yes, with one button. Meta's rules mean the person is only opted in, and the 24-hour messaging window only opens, once they tap a button or reply. Without the opening DM you can still send the link, but you cannot follow up, and the person never becomes a contact. It costs them one tap.

How many people can the free ManyChat plan handle?

25 active contacts a month, meaning 25 people who receive a DM (checked Sept 2026). After that the replies stop until the next month, and the free plan has no overage option. Watch the Insights tab on the day a post takes off, and move to Essential at $14 a month billed annually when one post passes 25 keyword comments.
