Every Instagram account you follow that ends its captions with "comment WORD and I'll send it to you" is running the same tool. It is ManyChat, it is an official Meta partner, and it has been the default for comment-to-DM automation since Instagram opened its messaging API. This review is for the one-person marketing team asking the only question that matters: is it worth a subscription yet, or is the manual version still fine?

This is our research review, assembled from the pricing page, ManyChat's own help centre and the review sites before our own field test. We are running the gate on our own Instagram this month, and the newsletter gets the numbers first. The short answer: the product is excellent at its one job, and the price is the whole decision.

What is ManyChat, in marketer terms?

ManyChat listens to your Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok and Telegram accounts and answers on your behalf. The feature everyone buys it for is the Instagram comment trigger: someone comments a keyword under your post, ManyChat replies publicly under the comment, then sends them a private DM with a link. That turns a caption that cannot carry a link into a caption that can, and it turns a comment into a contact you can message again.

Around that core sit the pieces you would expect: a visual flow builder, story-reply and DM-keyword triggers, broadcasts to opted-in contacts, an inbox, and on the Pro plan and above an AI layer for conversational replies. For a solo marketer the comment trigger is 90% of the value, and that is what the rest of this review is about.

What does ManyChat cost in 2026?

ManyChat replaced its old Free and Pro structure on 2 March 2026. The change that matters: the free plan dropped from 1,000 contacts to 25. Prices checked 2026-09 on manychat.com/pricing, annual billing shown first:

PlanPrice (annual)Month-to-monthActive contacts / monthWhat you get
Free$0$0252 channels, up to 4 automations, ManyChat branding on replies
Essential$14/mo$17/mo2502 channels, unlimited automations, no branding, email support
Pro$29/mo$39/mo2,5003 channels, broadcasts, AI replies
Business$69/mo$99/mo7,500Unlimited channels, shared inbox, priority support
Advanced$139/mo$199/mo25,00010 users, everything above

The billing unit is the active contact: one real person you exchange messages with in a billing month, no matter how many messages. A person who comments your keyword and gets a DM is an active contact. So the free plan is not "25 conversations"; it is 25 commenters, and then the replies stop until next month. On paid plans you keep running and pay a per-contact overage, with a cap you can set yourself. Essential and Pro have a 14-day free trial, and cancellations inside 30 days are refunded on request.

What users love

Three themes run through the reviews. It works. G2 rates it 4.5 out of 5 across 163 reviews and Capterra 4.6 across 72, and the comment-to-DM flow is the feature reviewers single out. It is fast to build. Users describe duplicating a working automation in under five minutes, and the Quick Automation template walks a first-timer through a live comment gate in one sitting. It is the safe choice. ManyChat is an official Meta business partner and one of the few tools with a TikTok partnership, which matters when your entire funnel depends on an API that Meta can revoke.

There is a strategic reason it has become a fixture in 2026 as well. Instagram's Adam Mosseri has said publicly that sends per reach is one of the most important ranking signals. A comment that becomes a DM conversation is precisely the loop the algorithm now rewards, and Metricool's 2026 data shows captions with a comment call-to-action drawing roughly three times the comments of captions without one.

What users complain about

Read the Trustpilot page before you subscribe: 2.5 out of 5 across 273 reviews, and the complaints are consistent. Billing. Users describe being charged after cancelling, refunds that took weeks, and bills that grew two to three times as contact lists grew. Support. Email only, slow, and slowest on exactly the billing questions. Disconnects. Instagram permissions expire or revoke, the automation stops firing mid-campaign, and nobody tells you until you notice the comments piling up unanswered. The AI. Included on Pro and above, but reviewers who tested it describe it as closer to keyword matching than to a conversation, and it cannot learn your content.

Then there are the rules that are Meta's, not ManyChat's, and they shape every flow you build. The first message after a comment must be a private reply. The 24-hour messaging window only opens once the person taps a button or replies, so a bare link with no button does not make them a contact. The comment trigger fires only on a person's first comment under a post, never on a second. And Instagram's spam filters watch identical auto-replies, so ManyChat tells you to rotate three variations and avoid emoji-only replies. None of this is a flaw in the product. It is the terrain, and the tutorial below is built around it.

The verdict for a marketing department of one

ManyChat passes the first two of our three tool rules: it serves a named hire (the Traffic Manager) and it subtracts a decision (you stop answering "link?" comments by hand). The third rule is where the honest answer lives. Hire it when the volume justifies it, not before. Answering keyword comments by hand costs about 30 seconds each. Below 25 comments per post the free plan covers you, and below that the manual DM is not even a chore.

Our rule of thumb: stay manual, or on the free plan, until a single post draws more than 25 keyword comments. At that point Essential's $14 buys back roughly 15 minutes per post and, more importantly, stops the gate from going silent on the post that finally worked. Skip Pro until you need broadcasts to your DM list or a third channel. And whichever plan you pick, put a monthly reminder in your calendar to open ManyChat and check the connection, because the failure mode is silent.

The setup takes twenty minutes, and we wrote it down step by step in the comment-gate tutorial. For where it sits in the wider stack, see every tool behind this site with its current price and the posting-frequency math that decides whether Instagram deserves the gate at all.

Questions we actually get

Is ManyChat free in 2026?

There is a free plan, but since 2 March 2026 it covers only 25 active contacts a month, with up to 4 automations, two channels and ManyChat branding on replies. An active contact is one person you message in a billing month, so 25 commenters on one post use it up. Essential and Pro come with a 14-day free trial and no branding.

How much does ManyChat cost?

Billed annually: Essential $14 a month for 250 active contacts, Pro $29 for 2,500, Business $69 for 7,500, Advanced $139 for 25,000 (checked Sept 2026 on manychat.com/pricing). Month-to-month is higher: Essential $17, Pro $39. Above your limit you pay a per-contact overage, which you can cap in settings.

Does comment-to-DM automation hurt Instagram reach?

There is no evidence that it does, and some that it helps. Instagram's Adam Mosseri has named sends per reach as one of the most important ranking signals, and a comment that becomes a DM conversation is exactly that loop. The reach risk is elsewhere: Instagram's spam filters can flag identical auto-replies, so ManyChat tells you to rotate three variations and avoid emoji-only replies.

Do I need a Facebook Page to use ManyChat with Instagram?

No. You need a professional Instagram account (Business or Creator) and the 'Allow access to messages' switch turned on under Message controls in the Instagram app. Connecting through a Facebook Page is optional and mainly matters if you also run Meta ads.
